The country has an estimated annual honey production potential of 138,000 metric tonnes, but actual production was about 33,276 metric tonnes in 2024, representing only around 22% of the estimated capacity. The sector is largely dominated by smallholder beekeepers using traditional log hives, while challenges such as limited financing, weak aggregation, inadequate processing and storage facilities, poor quality control, and dependence on informal markets continue to limit its growth. The fact sheet highlights key opportunities for investment in modern hive financing, district-level processing and aggregation centres, food-grade storage, certification, traceability, branding, and value addition of honey by-products. It proposes financing models such as group-guaranteed lending, anchor-buyer financing, cooperative lending, and blended finance to improve access to finance and strengthen market linkages. With appropriate investment and value chain development, Tanzania can increase honey productivity, improve quality, enhance farmer incomes, and position its honey products for premium domestic, regional, and international markets.en-USHONEY FACTSHEETArticle
